Windows Media Player 7.1 and 8 for Pocket PC May Not Play Video Files (318652)

SYMPTOMS

You may not be able to view some .asf or .wmv files by using Windows Media Player 7.1 for Pocket PC 2000 or Windows Media Player 8 for Pocket PC 2002. Neither the audio nor the video portion of the file is available when you try to play it. You can play these file correctly with Windows Media Player 7 for Pocket PC 2000.

CAUSE

Windows Media Player 7.1 for Pocket PC 2000 and Windows Media Player 8 for Pocket PC 2002 play only media files that use compatible codecs. If an unsupported audio codec is used in conjunction with a supported video codec, you cannot play the media file.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, use compatible audio and video codecs in the same Windows Media file.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Certain codecs, such as the Sharp G.726 audio codec, are not compatible with Windows Media Player for Pocket PC.
