RunOnce Registry Entries Are Deleted If You Use the User Rights Deployment Method to Install Internet Explorer (318234)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6 for Windows 2000

This article was previously published under Q318234

SYMPTOMS

Custom registry entries located under the RunOnce registry key may be inadvertently deleted if you use the User Rights Deployment method to install Internet Explorer.

CAUSE

If you use the User Rights Deployment component of the Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) to allow non-administrator users to log on and finish the Internet Explorer installation after restarting, you must sometimes add custom setup parameters to the computer's RunOnce registry key. If you add a custom setup parameter to RunOnce, it is successfully migrated over to RunOnceTemp before the restart. However, if you add a child key under RunOnce\Setup, for example, the Setup branch is not migrated, and it causes whatever is set to run under Setup to fail after the user logs on to the computer.

This behavior occurs because of a coding error in which these subkeys are not successfully copied to their temporary key locations. Therefore, they are not migrated over correctly.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Internet Explorer 6 service pack that contains this hotfix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:NOTE: In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The typical support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.

You must have the following two files to resolve this issue:
  • IE55urd.exe
  • Q318234.exe
The IE55urd.exe file must be manually installed. The standard location for this file is c:\program files\IEAK6\iebin\en\optional. Just copy IE55urd.exe to the directory, and then rebuild your IEAK image.

Q318234.exe is a hotfix, and it must be installed on any client before you install the User Rights Deployment component. You must also install this hotfix on the server on which the IEAK package is built.

The English version of these fixes should have the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time.
