By default, the Site Server 3.0 Search component does not index property values that are greater than 4,096 bytes, or 4 kilobytes (KB).

This size limit is a configurable parameter that can be adjusted by setting the MaxBytesPerProperty registry setting on a per-catalog basis. The MaxBytesPerProperty setting defaults to 8,192 bytes because of Unicode conversion, which requires 2 bytes per character. This means that 4,096 is the effective limit.

It is not recommended that you change the MaxBytesPerProperty value. When you increase the MaxBytesPerProperty value, this only allows the property to be indexed. This does not guarantee that the document will be included in the search results. This is because the query remoting code limits the maximum message size for each document to 4 KB as well. Therefore, the total number of bytes for all columns requested cannot exceed 4 KB. For example, if one of the properties in a document has a value of 3,900 bytes, and the number of bytes for the other properties add up to more than 300 bytes, the document will not be included in the search results. This value is not configurable, and no errors will be logged.
