Several conditions can exist that may cause the Visual Studio .NET integrated development environment (IDE) and the Visual Studio 2005 IDE to launch slowly. To improve performance, follow the steps outlined in this article to optimize the launch process of the IDE.

Close the Start Page and load an empty environment

  1. In the IDE, on the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. In the General section, change the At Startup setting to Show empty environment.

    Note In Visual Studio 2005, in the startup section, change the At Startup setting to Show empty environment.

Close the default windows

The following windows open by default when the IDE loads:
  • Dynamic Help
  • Solution Explorer
  • Class View
  • Server Explorer
  • ToolBox
Close the default windows that load with the IDE to prevent the default windows from appearing when the IDE loads.
