SYMPTOMS

A privilege-elevation vulnerability exists in the Remote Access Service phonebook. This vulnerability might allow an attacker who successfully exploits the vulnerability to gain complete control over the computer. The attacker can then take any action on the computer such as adding, deleting, or modifying data; creating or deleting user accounts; or adding accounts to the local Administrators group.

This vulnerability can be exploited only by an attacker who has credentials to log on to the computer on which the Remote Access service phonebook is located. Best practices suggest that unprivileged users not be permitted to interactively log on to business-critical servers. If you follow this guideline, such servers are not at risk from this vulnerability.

CAUSE

This vulnerability is caused by an unchecked buffer in the Remote Access Service phonebook. By creating a specially malformed phonebook entry, an attacker might be able to conduct a buffer-overrun attack against an affected computer.
