SYMPTOMS

After you install a new hardware device, you may experience a short pause before the device is recognized by Windows XP. The device is not available to other programs on your computer until Windows XP recognizes it.

For example, Windows XP may take up to 15 seconds to update the modem status from Not present to COMx (in the Modem tool in Control Panel) after you install a new U.S. Robotics Voice Faxmodem Pro USB modem. Therefore, any program that tries to use the modem cannot use it until the modem is recognized by Windows XP.

NOTE: Windows 2000 may take only a few seconds to recognize the new hardware device after it is installed.

RESOLUTION

MORE INFORMATION

If a program uses the Remote Access Service (RAS) application programming interface (API) or the Telephony API (TAPI) to communicate with a USB modem, these APIs may not work for approximately 15 seconds after you install and turn on the modem.
