XADM: Microsoft Exchange Information Store Does Not Start on a Member Server (318098)

SYMPTOMS

On a member server, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service does not start. When you start the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service at a command prompt, you may receive the following error message:
A service specific error occured: 0.
In addition, the following event ID message may be be logged in the Application event log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeIS
Event Category: General
Event ID: 5000
Description:
Unable to initialize the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service. Error 0x8004010f.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because read access to the WellKnown Security Principals container in the Active Directory Configuration container for the Everyone account is absent.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior:

  1. Log on as domain administrator, and then start ADSI Edit.

    WARNING: If you use the ADSI Edit snap-in, the LDP utility, or any other LDAP version 3 client, and you incorrectly modify the attributes of Active Directory objects, you can cause serious problems. These problems may require you to reinstall Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, or both. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems that occur if you incorrectly modify Active Directory object attributes can be solved. Modify these attributes at your own risk.
  2. Click to expand the Configuration container, and then click the CN=WellKnown Security Principals container.
  3. Right-click Properties, and then locate the Security tab.
  4. Click Add, type everyone, and then click OK.
  5. Under the Allow column, click to select the Read check box.
