SYMPTOMS

When you try to print from Visual Studio .NET (VS .NET) and no printer is installed on the Windows XP operating system, you receive a prompt to install a printer. If you try to install a printer from VS .NET, the VS .NET interactive development environment (IDE) may close unexpectedly (crash).

RESOLUTION

To avoid this potential problem, install the printer from outside the VS .NET IDE. To install a printer, follow these steps:
  1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add a printer.
  2. Follow the onscreen instructions to add a printer.
