FIX: NTVDM Crashes When You Press F7 or Run Japanese 16-bit Applications (317997)

This article was previously published under Q317997 SYMPTOMS When you run 16-bit applications such as Edit.Com, or if
you press F7 in the command console on the Windows XP Embedded Japanese
runtime, the NT virtual DOS machine (NTVDM) stops responding (crashes), and the
computer eventually becomes unresponsive to any input. RESOLUTION To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
- Download the Japanese Windows XP Embedded QFE Hotfix,

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most
current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file
was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to
prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.
- Import this hotfix into the component database from which
you build the Japanese runtime.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that
this is a problem in Japanese Windows XP Embedded.
MORE INFORMATION NTVDM crashes with Japanese 16-bit applications because the
System.ini file that is used by default is configured to support English 16-bit
applications. The Japanese Windows XP Embedded QFE Hotfix updates the
components that create the System.ini file contents so that System.ini
