XCCC: When a User Opens Attachments in Outlook Web Access the User Is Prompted for Credentials (317901)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server SP2

This article was previously published under Q317901

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open a Microsoft Office document attachment (such as .doc or .xls) in Outlook Web Access (OWA), you are prompted for credentials. When you type your credentials again or click Cancel the attachment opens.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you try to open the attachment by using Microsoft Word or any other Microsoft Office program (which depends on the attachment type) from a workstation that has Microsoft Office 2000 installed, but does not have Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a installed.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods:
  • Use Internet Explorer 6 or later to open attachments in OWA.
  • Apply Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a or later if you are using Microsoft Office 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

The behavior in the "Symptoms" section does not occur if:
  • The user saves the file to disk, and then opens the file by using the appropriate program.
  • The user opens .txt, .jpg and .pdf attachments directly (without saving the file to the hard disk or another location).
  • The user accesses OWA by using Internet Explorer 6 or later.
This behavior in this article has not been tested on Microsoft Office 98.
