INFO: Upgrading BizTalk Server (317884)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft BizTalk Server 2000
- Microsoft BizTalk Server 2002
This article was previously published under Q317884 SUMMARY
You can upgrade BizTalk Server to the latest version without uninstalling the previous version of BizTalk Server. To do so, use the following guidelines:
- Back up the BizTalk Server databases as a precautionary measure.
In a default Microsoft BizTalk Server installation, the Microsoft SQL Server databases are InterchangeBTM, InterchangeDTA, InterchangeSQ and XLANG. Data that is stored in the database is not lost during the upgrade. The upgrade process upgrades the databases to the latest version that BizTalk Server requires without losing the data.
NOTE: If you choose to uninstall BizTalk Server, the databases are not removed and the data is not lost. When you perform the installation of the next version, choose the Install to an Existing Database option.
- Record the BizTalk Server services and the COM+ applications logon and identity properties.
In most typical BizTalk Server installations, you need to modify the BizTalk Messaging Service and COM+ application properties. These settings are reset to the default settings during an upgrade and you need a record of these settings to restore the services to accommodate your server environment. - To upgrade BizTalk Server without uninstalling the current version, you have to use the same language and edition as the currently-installed version.
BizTalk Server only supports an in-place upgrade as long as the language and edition of the products are the same. For instance, you can successfully upgrade from BizTalk Server 2000 Enterprise Edition Japanese to BizTalk Server 2002 Enterprise Edition Japanese by performing an in-place upgrade. However, an in-place upgrade from BizTalk Server 2000 Standard Edition French to BizTalk Server 2002 Enterprise Edition French is not possible. During the upgrade you would be prompted to uninstall the previous version before the installation of the current version can be performed. The following table should help explain.
