OFFXP: Months Are Sorted Incorrectly, Not Grouped by Year (317838)

This article was previously published under Q317838

SYMPTOMS

If you use an Office XP PivotTable Web Component that is based on an OLAP cube, time dimensions, particularly months, may not be sorted as they are in Office 2000 Web Components. For example, instead of grouping the months by year (Jan - Dec 2000, Jan - Dec 2001), the Office Web Component 2002 groups the months together (Jan, Jan, Feb, Feb, March, and March).

CAUSE

In Office 2000, members are shown in the order in which they are presented in the database. For example, if the months appear in the database as Feb, Jan, Apr, and Mar, that is the way that they are displayed in the PivotTable. Office XP components try to sort the members into the correct order, for example, Jan, Feb, March, April, or Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. The problem occurs when the supporting hierarchy is missing. For example, if you have two years' worth of data, but you do not include the years' hierarchy level in the PivotTable, you see the behavior that is described in the "Symptoms" section of the article.
