Agent Manager Queries Active Directory Multiple Times (317824)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Operations Manager 2000

This article was previously published under Q317824

SYMPTOMS

When you are using Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) in an Active Directory environment, Agent Manager may take several hours or days to complete its cycle. This can occur if you are using wildcard expressions in your Managed Computer Rules (MCRs), and you have a large amount of computer objects in the Active Directory.

CAUSE

When Agent Manager runs the scan, it queries Active Directory for each MCR that lists a domain and that contains a wildcard expression. For example, if you have 13 MCRs with wildcard expressions for the MOMDOM domain, Agent Manager completes 13 separate ADSI queries against the MOMDOM domain Active Directory. This is a performance/scalabity problem.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, you can use the Manualmc.txt file to list only the computers that you want to scan, or you can create MCRs without using wildcard expressions and list the computers you want to scan by name.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
