The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2002 Service Pack 1 (SP-1)
  • Microsoft Office XP Multilingual User Interface Pack

This article was previously published under Q317806

SYMPTOMS

In a text frame, if you type the names of particular Microsoft programs, PowerPoint stops responding. This problem occurs when you type the program name in uppercase letters. If you start Task Manager, PowerPoint is listed as "Not Responding."

This problem occurs if you type any of the following Microsoft product names:
  • POWERPOINT
  • WORD
  • EXCEL
  • ACCESS
  • WINDOWS
  • OUTLOOK
  • VISIO

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the Brazilian Portuguese Language Pack is installed and the Windows Regional Settings are set to Brazilian. When the Brazilian spelling checker checks any of the words in all uppercase letters in the list in the "Symptoms" section of this article, a spelling error is generated. As the spelling checker processes the word, it reports that the word has a length of zero characters. This prevents PowerPoint from correctly processing the spelling error. Therefore, PowerPoint stops responding.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, download and install the Office XP Service Pack 2 for Multilingual User Interface Pack. For more information, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
