XADM: You Receive Confusing Error Messages When You Post Messages That Exceed Public Folder Post Limit (317676)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, when used with:
    • the operating system: Microsoft Windows 2000

This article was previously published under Q317676

SYMPTOMS

In Exchange 2000, if you set a Prohibit post limit on a public information store database, and then try to post to a public folder that has already reached the limit that you set, you may receive the following error message if you use an Outlook Web Access (OWA) client computer:
You have exceeded the storage limit on your mailbox. Delete some mail from your mailbox or contact your system administrator to adjust your storage limit.
If you try to either post a message to a public folder that makes the folder exceed the limit or attach a file that exceeds the limit even before you post the message, you may receive a different error message if you use the OWA client:
This item exceeds the maximum size defined for this folder and cannot be saved. Contact your administrator to have the folder limits increased.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.

MORE INFORMATION

If you post a message to a public folder that has already reached the limit that you set, you expect to receive a message that states that the Prohibit post limit for a public folder was reached instead of the error message that states that you have exceeded the storage limit on your mailbox.

The second error message that is described in the "Summary" section of this article (which is received if you post messages with attachments) is more accurate and more descriptive, but it does not explicitly state that the Prohibit post limit for a public folder has been reached. If you try to post a message to the same folder by using a Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) client (for example, an Outlook client), you may receive either of the following error messages:
The message store has reached its maximum size. To reduce the amount of data in this message store, select some items that you no longer need and press Shift + Del to permanently delete them.

-or-

The item could not be saved to this folder. This folder has been deleted or moved, or you do not have permission. Do you want to save a copy of it in the default folder for the item?
