FIX: Add-ins, macros, and Forms Designer do not work after the removal of a Visual Studio .NET product (317417)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Visual Studio .NET (2002), Professional Edition

This article was previously published under Q317417

SYMPTOMS

Macros, add-ins, and the Forms Designer do not work after you remove one Visual Studio .NET Edition from a multiple-edition installation.

CAUSE

The Visual Studio .NET removal program may delete the Office.dll and Envdte.dll files from the c:\Winnt\Microsoft.Net\Framework\v1.03705 folder, or delete entries in the Global Assembly Cache (GAC) for these components, or both. Additionally, the removal program deletes the Sn.exe file from \Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET\FrameworkSDK\bin\sn.exe.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, repair the installation by following these steps.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
  2. Select the Microsoft Visual Studio .NET product that is installed. Expand the item to display a button.
  3. Click the Change/Remove button. The Visual Studio .NET Setup dialog box appears.
  4. Click Item 2, Visual Studio .NET. The Microsoft Visual Studio .NET Maintenance dialog box appears.
  5. Select Repair/Reinstall. After the repair process is completed, Office.dll and Envdte.dll will be correctly installed and registered in the GAC.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This bug was corrected in Visual Studio .NET (2003).
