An Authentication Dialog Box Appears Three Times When You Open Published Office Files in SharePoint Portal Server Web Folders with Basic Authentication (317343)

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Microsoft Office 2000 file from the Web folder with Basic authentication, an authentication dialog box may appear more than one time.

CAUSE

In a Web folder, the Read Only attribute is set on documents that are checked in and documents that are published. This problem may occur if you open the Office 2000 documents in the Web folder with Basic authentication and Read/Write access. Authentication does not work, and an authentication dialog box appears again.

NOTE: This problem does not occur with Office 2000 files that are checked out because the Read/Write attribute is set on those files instead of the Read Only attribute.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001.
This problem was first corrected in Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001 Service Pack 2.
