MMS Lotus Notes Plug-In Alters the Windows Path Environment (317206)

This article was previously published under Q317206

SYMPTOMS

After you install the Microsoft Metadirectory Services (MMS) Lotus Notes Plug-in, your command-line tools (such as the Ipconfig.exe tool) may stop working correctly. For example, when you run the ipconfig /all command, you may receive the following error message:
'ipconfig' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

CAUSE

This problem may occur because when you install the MMS Lotus Notes plug-in, it updates the Windows path environment with the path to the Notes client folder, for example, C:\Lotus\Notes. The installation overwrites the path as a STRING TYPE (REG_SZ) value, changing it from the original EXPAND TYPE (REG_EXPAND_SZ) value. Once the path variable has been changed, attempts to run command-line tools from the command prompt do not work because the path that is being searched is actually "%systemroot%\system32" which does not exist in its un-expanded state. When the TYPE is set REG_EXPAND_SZ, any system variables are expanded to the full path, c:\Winnt\System32.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem:
  1. View the PATH environment variable. To do so, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the Advanced tab, click Environment Variables, and then view the contents of the System Variables box.
  2. Copy the PATH value, and then delete the PATH environment variable.
  3. Create a new PATH, and then paste it into the Variable value box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
