XFOR: Cluster Service Reports Error 1024 When the Exchange 2000 MTA Restores the Checkpoint for the "MSExchagneDSAccess" Registry Key (317199)

SYMPTOMS

During a Move Group or Failover operation in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server, the following event ID 1024 message is logged:

Resource: ClusSvc
Category: (64)
Event ID: 1024
Description:
The registry checkpoint for cluster resource Exchange Message Transfer Agent Instance - (SDRU005) could not be restored to registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeDSAccess. The resource may not function correctly. Make sure that no other processes have open handles to registry keys in this registry subtree.

The Cluster.log file contains the following error message:
0000085c.000008d4::2002/01/23-09:46:40.698 [CP] Error installing registry database from C:\DOCUME~1\cluster\LOCALS~1\Temp\CLS69.tmp, error 5.
0000085c.000008d4::2002/01/23-09:46:40.698 [CP] CppWatchCallback: could not restore temp file C:\DOCUME~1\cluster\LOCALS~1\Temp\CLS69.tmp to key SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeDSAccess error 5
However, you can bring all of the resources online and no other error or warning messages are logged in the Application event log.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the registry key for that resource is being used. Specifically, the key is still open by the RegRestoreKey function and returns ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.

This problem was corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
