Out-of-Cluster Deployment of a Web Application Fails Silently (317026)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Application Center 2000
This article was previously published under Q317026 SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to perform an out-of-cluster deployment of a Web application, this attempt may fail silently (the job status indicates success) if the application's virtual directory was not created through the Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) Virtual Directory Creation Wizard.
CAUSE
Microsoft Application Center 2000 does not deploy a Web application out of cluster if the VR_PATH metabase value is missing for that application in the metabase. IIS does not create a VR_PATH value in the metabase for directories that are contained within your home directory; therefore, applications created in directories that are contained within your home directory cannot be deployed by Application Center 2000.
RESOLUTIONA supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next version of Application Center that contains this hotfix. To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site: NOTE: In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The typical support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.
The Rdrviis.dll file is modified to log error event 5049 when you replicate a Web application for which no VR_PATH is defined. If you receive an error event 5049 while replicating a Web application, you need to create the VR_PATH value in the metabase for that virtual directory.
The English-language version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:
Date Time Version Size File name
------------------------------------------------------
02/18/2002 05:20 PM 1.0.441.5 23,520 rdrviis.dll
WORKAROUND
Follow these steps to create the VR_PATH value for any virtual directory:
- In the IIS snap-in, select the Web site to which you want to add a directory.
- On the Action menu, point to New, and then click Virtual Directory.
- Use the Virtual Directory Creation Wizard to complete this task.
If you are using the NT file system (NTFS), you can also create a virtual directory by doing the following: Right-click a directory in Windows Explorer, click Sharing, and then select the Web Sharing property sheet.
STATUS This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Application Center 2000 Service Pack 2. To download Application Center 2000 SP2, visit the following Microsoft Web site: MORE INFORMATION
