XADM: The Nokia Communicator 9210 Cellular Phone Cannot Connect with IMAP on Exchange 2000 (316947)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q316947

SYMPTOMS

The Nokia Communicator 9210 cellular phone may not be able to connect to an Exchange 2000 server if the server is configured to use secure Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) sessions.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the Nokia Communicator 9210 first connects to the Exchange server on port 143, and then attempts to negotiate a secure connection to port 993. Exchange 2000 does not negotiate ports; if Exchange 2000 is configured to use secure IMAP sessions, Exchange 2000 uses port 993.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, make sure that the Exchange 2000 server's IMAP protocol is not configured to use secure sessions if you use a Nokia Communicator 9210 as a client. If you do so, the server listens on port 143 for all IMAP connections and the sessions are not encrypted.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
