You Cannot Expand Computer Shares with the Ntbackup Tool in the Entire Network Location (316929)

  • Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition

This article was previously published under Q316929

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Ntbackup tool, you cannot select a network resource to back up or restore to if you view the Entire Network location. Note that the Entire Network location also includes Microsoft Terminal Services, Microsoft Windows Network, or Web Client Network locations.

You can use the Ntbackup tool to browse the network in the Entire Network location so that you can choose a resource to back up or restore to. When you either double-click a computer name or click the plus (+) sign to expand the computer shares, nothing occurs. If you attempt to perform a backup operation, the right pane displays a "no entries found" message for that computer.

If you click Start, and then click My Network Places (or if you use Windows Explorer) to browse to the network location, the computer shares are displayed or you are prompted for credentials to connect. Even though this occurs, you cannot use the Ntbackup tool to back up or restore to the location.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, click Start, and then click My Network Places. In the My Network Places window, click Add Network Place, and then follow the instructions in the wizard to select the network resource that you want to back up or restore to. When you do this, the My Network Places location is displayed as a separate item in the Ntbackup tool.
