SYMPTOMS

You may receive the following error message:
Money cannot determine which place to load. Please reinstall Money.
This behavior can occur in the following circumstances:
  • You attempt to start Money for the first time after you run Setup.
  • You attempt to start Money after you upgrade your operating system to Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows 2000, or Microsoft Windows NT.
  • You attempt to edit the Budget or access accounts.

CAUSE

This issue can occur as a result of one of the following conditions:
  • An antivirus program was running when you installed Money.
  • You do not have administrative privileges to the Windows XP-based computer that you are using.
  • Your computer has a beta version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed.
  • The Money program files were copied from a Microsoft Windows 98-based computer to your Windows NT-based computer, Windows 2000-based computer, or Windows XP-based computer before Money was installed.
  • Your installation of Money is corrupted.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps.

Use an Account with Administrative Privileges

If you are using a Windows NT-based computer, a Windows 2000-based computer, or a Windows XP-based computer, you must have administrative privileges on your local computer in order to use Money. For more information about how to create user accounts and passwords, see Windows Help and Support. If you are confident that you are logged on with administrative privileges, and you continue to receive the error message, proceed to the next step.

Uninstall the Beta Version of Microsoft Visual Studio

If a beta version of Microsoft Visual Studio is installed on your computer, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. If you are using a Windows XP-based computer, click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. In the Currently installed programs list, click Microsoft Visual Studio, and then click Remove.
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions to remove Visual Studio. If you are required to restart your computer, click Yes.
  5. Start Money. If you continue to receive the error message, proceed to the next step.

Reinstall Money

To reinstall Money, follow these steps.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. If you are using a Windows XP-based computer, click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. In the Currently installed programs list, click Microsoft Money 2002, and then click Remove.
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions to uninstall Money. If you are prompted to restart your computer, click No.
  5. Use steps 1 through 4 above to remove any antivirus software that may be installed on your computer.
  6. Click Start, and then click Run.
  7. In the Open box, type Regedit, and then press ENTER.
  8. Delete the following Registry keys:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Money

    -and-

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Money

  9. On the Registry menu, click Exit.
  10. Start Windows Explorer and remove the following folder:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money

  11. Restart your computer. If you are using a Windows NT-based computer, a Windows 2000-based computer, or a Windows XP-based computer, you must log on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
  12. Reinstall Money.
  13. Reinstall your antivirus software.
