When you attempt to open a Microsoft Project workgroup message in your e-mail program, you may not be able to open and read the e-mail message. For example, you receive an error message similar to one of the following:

Windows cannot open the file Mspj0000.mtm, the file is not associated with a program.

-or-

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if one or both of the following conditions are true:
  • Microsoft Project Workgroup Message Handler is not installed on the computer.
  • There is no file association between Openmail.exe and the .mtm file extension or the .mxm file extension.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, install Microsoft Project Workgroup Message Handler (if it not already installed), and then associate the .mtm file extension or the .mxm file extension (as appropriate) with the Openmail.exe program. To do this, follow these steps in the order in which they are presented.

Method 1: Install Microsoft Project Workgroup Message Handler

Run Wgsetup.exe to install Microsoft Project Workgroup Message Handler. Wgsetup.exe is located in the Wgsetup folder on the Microsoft Project compact disc (CD). To install Microsoft Project Workgroup Message Handler, follow these steps:
  1. Do one of the following:
    • Insert the Microsoft Project CD into the computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD to prevent it from starting automatically. Browse to the Wgsetup folder.
    • Connect to the network share that contains the Wgsetup folder.
  2. Double-click Wgsetup.exe.
  3. Follow the instructions on the screen to install Microsoft Project Workgroup Message Handler.

Method 2: Associate the File Extension with Openmail.exe

Openmail.exe is a component of Microsoft Project Workgroup Message Handler. Create a new .mtm file extension or .mxm file extension, and then associate the file extension with Openmail.exe. To do this, follow these steps.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Start Windows Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
  3. Click the File Types tab, and then click New.
  4. In the File Extension box, type mtm or mxm (as appropriate), and then click OK.

The file extension that you create is listed in the Registered file types box.
  5. Click the file extension that you created in step 4 (if it is not already selected), and then click Change.
  6. In the Open With dialog box, click Other. Locate Openmail.exe, click Openmail.exe, and then click Open.

If you are running Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), or Microsoft Windows XP, the Openmail.exe file is located in the following folder, where drive is the drive on which Microsoft Windows is installed:

    drive:\Windows

If you are running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 or Microsoft Windows 2000, the Openmail.exe file is located in the following folder, where drive is the drive on which Windows is installed:

    drive:\Winnt

  7. Click OK, and then click Close.
  8. Quit Windows Explorer.

MORE INFORMATION

You can send and receive workgroup messages with either Microsoft Project Central or an e-mail system. The requirements for using workgroup messaging with an e-mail system in Microsoft Project are the following:
  • A network. All of the workgroup members' computers must be connected to a network that can send and receive e-mail messages.
  • A MAPI-compliant, 32-bit e-mail system. Workgroup members must be connected through a Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) 32-bit e-mail system. MAPI-compliant e-mail products include Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Exchange, and Microsoft Mail.
  • Microsoft Project Workgroup Message Handler. All workgroup members must run Wgsetup.exe to install Microsoft Project Workgroup Message Handler. After you install this program, you can send and receive workgroup messages using your e-mail program.

NOTE: In Microsoft Project 98, Microsoft Project Workgroup Message Handler is automatically installed when Microsoft Project is installed on the workgroup manager's computer. In Microsoft Project 2000, Microsoft Project Workgroup Message Handler is not automatically installed. The workgroup manager must run Wgsetup.exe to install Microsoft Project Workgroup Message Handler.
