This article was previously published under Q316841 SYMPTOMS
When you use Outlook Express to import e-mail messages from a Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) client such as Microsoft Outlook, the file name of attachments in the original e-mail may be shortened to eight characters. For example, an attachment named "This is a file.doc" may be imported as "Thisisaf.doc."
CAUSE
Outlook Express uses MAPI convert to translate the e-mail message from Outlook. In the process, the file name is truncated to match the MS-DOS (8.3) short file name format.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
