PRB: Error Message: The Domain Name Server Could Not Be Notified 0xC0140056" (316811)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Application Center 2000 SP1

This article was previously published under Q316811

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Add Cluster Member Wizard to add a server to an existing cluster, or you use the New Cluster Wizard to create a new cluster, you may receive the following error message:
The domain name server could not be notified. 0xc0140056
NOTE: Only clusters that use Network Load Balancing (NLB) are affected.

CAUSE

The cluster wizards in Application Center 2000 use the EnableStatic method in the Win32_NetworkAdapterConfiguration class in Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). If the DNS Client service is not running, the EnableStatic class returns an error message that causes the wizard to fail.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, start the DNS Client service (DNScache) on the affected server or servers.

MORE INFORMATION

The DNS Client service optimizes the performance of Domain Name System (DNS) name resolution by storing previously resolved names in memory. If this service is turned off, the computer can still resolve DNS names by using the network's DNS servers.

Steps to Reproduce the Problem

  1. Turn off the DNS Client service on Server1.
  2. Attempt to create a new cluster with NLB on Server1. You receive the error message described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
