XADM: You Are Unable to Monitor the MSADC Object in System Monitor (316785)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
This article was previously published under Q316785 SYMPTOMS
After you upgrade Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 1 (SP1) to Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2 (SP2), the instances may disappear from the MSADC object in System Monitor.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue:
- Move all of your Connection Agreements to another MSADC computer.
If you cannot move the Connection Agreements to another MSADC computer, you need to delete the Connection Agreements, and then re-create them after you have completed steps 2 through 12. - Stop the Exchange 2000 Active Directory Connector service.
- Delete the MSADC registry key. To do so, you need to edit the registry.
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve
problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own
risk.
To delete the MSADC registry key:- Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
- Locate and click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSADC - On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then confirm the deletion.
- Quit Registry Editor.
- Start Microsoft Windows Explorer, locate the X:\Program Files\Exchsrvr folder (where X is the drive in which Exchange 2000 is installed), and then delete the MSADC folder.
NOTE: You receive an error message that states that Adcadmin.dll (and possibly other DLLs) is still being used and cannot be deleted. Rename all of these files to .old, and then restart the computer. Because there is no registry entry to edit for the MSADC, the computer cannot load the MSADC files that remain in the folder. - Start Windows Explorer, locate the X:\Program Files\Exchsrvr folder again (where X is the drive in which Exchange 2000 is installed), and then delete the remainder of that MSADC folder by deleting the MSADC folder and the contents that were previously in memory.
- Empty the Recycle Bin.
- Start Setup for the Exchange 2000 SP2 MSADC folder.
- Click Next.
NOTE: The dialog box states, "Previous Installation Detected;" this is OK. - Click Reinstall.
- Start System Monitor, and then click the MSADC object. Use _Total for instances.
- Quit System Monitor.
- Either move an existing Connection Agreement back to this server or create a new Connection Agreement, and then start System Monitor again to verify that the instances and counters are displayed.
- Move your Connection Agreements back (or if you had to delete the connection agreements in step 1, re-create them). The MSADC counter instances are displayed in the performance monitor again.
