SYMPTOMS

When you use the Office XP handwriting recognition and speech recognition components, you may notice that the computer runs more slowly than expected.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the computer does not meet or exceed the minimum requirements for processor speed and memory. The Office XP handwriting recognition and speech recognition components have the following minimum requirements:
  • Pentium 400 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor.
  • At least 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM.

RESOLUTION

Because text services (including handwriting recognition and speech recognition) are already part of Windows XP, Office XP Setup does not install these components on Windows XP. To turn text services on or off, use one of the following methods.

Control Panel

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Regional and Language Options.
  3. On the Languages tab, click Details.
  4. Click Language Bar.
  5. To turn text services off, click to select the Turn off advanced text services check box.

    -or-

    To turn text services on, click to clear the Turn off advanced text services check box.
  6. Click OK. If prompted to confirm the change, click Yes or OK. Click OK twice.

Language Bar

  1. Right-click the Language bar, and then click Settings.
  2. Click Language Bar.
  3. To turn text services off, click to select the Turn off advanced text services check box.

    -or-

    To turn text services on, click to clear the Turn off advanced text services check box.
  4. Click OK. If prompted to confirm the change, click Yes or OK. Click OK.
