XADM: Cannot Upgrade Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000 and KMS Does Not Start (316632)

This article was previously published under Q316632 SYMPTOMS You cannot upgrade an Exchange Server 5.5-based computer to
Exchange 2000. When this problem occurs, Key Management Service (KMS) does not
start. CAUSE This problem occurs if mailboxes or other objects on the
Exchange Server 5.5-based computer contain quotation marks ("). These symbols
cause a problem in Kmsserver.exe. RESOLUTION To resolve this problem, obtain
the latest service pack for Exchange 2000. For additional information, click

The English version of this fix should have the
following file attributes or later: Component: KMS NOTE: Due to file dependencies, this update requires Exchange 2000
Server Service Pack 1 (SP1).
STATUS This
problem was first corrected in Exchange 2000 Service Pack 2.Microsoft has confirmed that
this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
