PRJ2000: Project Manager's E-mail Address Is Overwritten When You Use Workgroup Features with Microsoft Project Central (316391)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 2000, when you use any workgroup feature to update information on the Microsoft Project Central server, the project manager's e-mail address uses domain user information. This behavior occurs even if the Windows authenticated account was manually created in Microsoft Project Central and a valid e-mail address was previously entered.

Workgroup features that may cause this problem to occur include Team Assign, Team Status, Team Update, Create Account, and Resend All Messages.

WORKAROUND

Method 1

To work around this problem, make the project manager a resource in the project, and manually type the e-mail address in the Resource Information dialog box. To do this, follow these steps:

In Microsoft Project 2000, open your project.
On the View menu, click Resource Sheet.
In a blank row, type the manager's name in the Resource Names field, and then press ENTER.
In the Resource Sheet, double-click your name to display the Resource Information dialog box.
On the General tab in the Windows Account box, type the manager's domain account information in the following format
domain_name\user_name
and then click Windows Account to resolve the account information.
In the Email box, type the manager's e-mail address, and then click OK.
On the View menu, click Gantt Chart.
In the Gantt Chart, do one of the following:
- Assign the manager as a resource to an existing task.
  
  -or-
- Create a new task and assign the manager as the resource.
On the File menu, click Save.
On the Tools menu, point to Workgroup, and then click Team Assign. Click Send.

Because the e-mail address for a resource can be different from the Windows user account, assign the manager as a resource to a task in Microsoft Project Central. This will prevent the e-mail address in Microsoft Project Central from being overwritten.

NOTE: If the project manager owns multiple projects on the Microsoft Project Central server, the project manager must perform this workaround on each of his or her projects.

Method 2

Because this behavior occurs only with Windows authenticated accounts, set the Authentication Type for the project manager to Microsoft Project Central Server authentication.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Project 2000 service pack that contains this hotfix.

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.
