Windows XP Setup Stops Responding on a Sony VAIO PGC-FXA Portable Computer with 34 Minutes of Setup Time Remaining (316386)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to upgrade your Sony VAIO PCG-FXA portable computer from Windows Millennium Edition to Windows XP Professional, Setup may stop responding with approximately 34 minutes remaining.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the version of Windows Millennium Edition that was included with the computer uses a driver that is incompatible with Windows XP Professional.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you must install updated drivers before you upgrade your computer to Windows XP. To do this, visit the following Sony Web site:

Note: Windows XP Home Edition is the supported upgrade path for Sony VAIO Computers that ship from the factory with Windows Millennium Edition already installed. Sony has not tested the installation of the Windows XP Professional Upgrade on these computers and does not provide support for this installation configuration.
