Backup in Advanced Security mode does not gather WINMSD information (316360)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

This article was previously published under Q316360

SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) Backup process may fail to gather system information from a remote SQL server. The problem occurs when the SMS site server is running in Advanced Security mode, if the SQL server is running on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer. The SMS Backup process completes, and a Smsbksqlconfigntwinmsd.txt file is generated. However, the contents of this file show that no remote system data was actually gathered, and a "Can't Collect Information" entry is displayed for every component section.

CAUSE

This problem can occur when WMI blocks communication from a remote-computer process that is running as LocalSystem. The SMS Backup process runs as LocalSystem under the advanced security model, and because of this, the remote query does not work.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem and to gather the information from the SQL server, run the winmsd /computer computer name /report output report name command from a command prompt on the SQL server. For example, if your remote SQL server name was "SMSDBServer", you would run the winmsd /computer SMSDBServer /report Smsbksqlconfigntwinmsd.txt command. This command would generate the report that was originally intended for use in the SMS Backup reporting bundle.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
