Event ID 16385 Occurs When You Use the RTM Code to Run a Repair Operation (316267)

SYMPTOMS

If you run the Repair option from the SharePoint Portal Server 2001 installation CD-ROM after you have installed SharePoint Portal Server Service Pack 1 (SP1), the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service may start normally but the SharePoint Portal Server service and IIS Admin service may remain stopped. In addition, the following event ID message may be logged in your server's Event Viewer logs:

    Description:
    The SharePoint Portal Server service failed to start due to the following error:
    The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.
If you attempt to start the SharePoint Portal Server service manually, you may receive the following error message:
Could not start the SharePoint Portal Server service on Local Computer.

Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, rerun SharePoint Portal Server SP1 setup program and choose the upgrade operation. When you do so, the errors listed will be corrected.

If you are running SharePoint Portal Server SP1, (version 10.145.4629), and you run the repair operation from the original SharePoint Portal Server 2001 Release to Manufacturing (RTM) CD-ROM, (version 10.145.3914), the repair process should prompt you to reboot your server. When the server restarts after the repair operation, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service may start but the SharePoint Portal Server service and the IIS Admin service may remain stopped.

After you run the repair operation with the RTM version, if you open the Registry Editor and locate the following registry key: 

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SharePoint Portal Server

The following information is displayed: 

CurrentVersion: 10.145.3914
InstallType: RTM

However, if you open the C:\Program Files\SharePoint Portal Server\Bin file, and then view the version of the binaries, the version number that is displayed is: 

File Version: 10.145.4629

NOTE: To view the version of one of the SharePoint Portal Serverbinaries, right-click the desired file in Windows Explorer and click Properties. When the file's Properties dialog appears, click the Version tab and note the File version.
