SYMPTOMS

When you try to package or deploy an application by using the Microsoft Exchange SDK Application Deployment Wizard, you may receive one of the following error messages:
Msxml3.dll has been installed on your machine to replace msxml.dll rather than to run side-by-side with it. This may cause the Application Wizard to fail. Would you like to continue anyway?

-or-

Msxml4.dll has been installed on your machine to replace msxml.dll rather than to run side-by-side with it. This may cause the Application Wizard to fail. Would you like to continue anyway?

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if either of the following conditions is true:
  • A computer on which Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 is installed is used to package an application for deployment.

    -or-
  • The Application Deployment Wizard is used to deploy an application on a computer on which Internet Explorer 6.0 is installed.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, use either of the following methods, as appropriate to your circumstances:
  • If you created the installation package on a computer on which Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 is installed, click OK in response to the error message.

The application is then deployed normally. -or-

  • If you created the installation package on a computer on which Internet Explorer 6.0 is installed, cancel the installation process, and then repackage the application by using a computer on which Internet Explorer 5.0 is installed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

In either of the situations described in the "Resolution" section of this article, you receive one of the error messages. If you packaged the application on a computer on which Internet Explorer 5.0 is installed, you can safely instruct the computer to continue with the installation.

However, if you used a computer on which Internet Explorer 6.0 is installed, and you instruct the computer to continue with the installation, the application is not deployed properly.
