How to download and install the update
Note For Office XP to function correctly, you must restart your
computer after you install this Update.
Client Update
If you installed Office XP from a CD-ROM, you have the following
two options:
- Use the Office Product Updates Web site to automatically
install all of the latest updates that includes all available Service Packs and
Public Updates.
- Install only the Public Update
by using the steps that are described later.
Both options require that you have your Office XP CD-ROM
available throughout the installation process.
Office product updates
To have the Office Product Updates Web site detect the required
updates that you must install on your computer, visit the following Microsoft
Web site:
After detection is complete, you receive a list of recommended
updates for your approval. Click
Start Installation to
complete the process.
Install only the Office XP Alternate User Input Update
Follow these steps to download and install the client update:
- Open your Web browser and visit the following Microsoft Web
site:
- Click Download Now.
- Click Save to save the Oxpauiu.exe file to the selected folder.
- In Microsoft Windows Explorer, double-click Oxpauiu.exe.
- If you are prompted to install the update, click Yes.
- Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
- If you are prompted to insert your Office XP CD, insert it
and then click OK.
- When you receive a message that indicates the installation
is successful, click OK.
- Restart the computer.
Note After you install the update, you cannot remove it.

Administrative update
If you installed Office XP from a server location, the server
administrator must update the server location with the administrative update
and deploy that update to your computer.
If you are the server
administrator, follow these steps to download the update.
Note There is only one update file for both users and administrators.
- Click the following link:
- Click Save and select a location to save the file on your computer's hard
disk.
- Click Start and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type the following command
download path\MSI file\Oxpauiu.exe /t:c:\Oxpauiu /c
where download path is the path to
your desktop and MSI file is is the MSI database
package for the Office XP product (for example, ProPlus.msi). - Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
- After the file is extracted, click Start and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type the following command
msiexec /a admin path\MSI file /p C:\oxpauiu\msctf.msp SHORTFILENAMES=1 /qb
where admin path is the path to your
administrative installation point for Office XP (for example, C:\OfficeXP), and
MSI file is the MSI database package for the Office XP product (for
example, ProPlus.msi). - To deploy the update to the client workstations, click Start and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type the following command:
msiexec /i admin path\MSI file REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=vomus /qb
where admin path is the path to your
administrative installation point for Office XP (for example, C:\OfficeXP), and
MSI file is the MSI database package for the Office XP product (for
example, ProPlus.msi).Note After installation is completed, restart the client computer.

How to determine whether the update is installed
The updated files are:
- SPTIP.dll updated to version 5.1.2409.24.
- MSCTF.dll updated to version 5.1.2409.22.
- MSIMTF.dll updated to version 5.1.2409.22.
Issues that are fixed by the update
The update fixes the following issues:
- Office XP Input Method Editor stops working for East Asian
languages, and you can type in English only.
- When you open an attachment that is sent in an e-mail
message, Microsoft Outlook 2002 appears to stop responding (hang) and then
finally opens the attachment.
