BUG: IMAP4 May Consume 100 Percent of the CPU Resources When It Decodes a Message Header (316122)

SYMPTOMS

The Internet Message Access Protocol 4 (IMAP4) module may consume 100 percent of the CPU resources when you try to download a message. The following symptoms may also occur:
  • You may experience problems fetching mail parts.
  • Incorrect headers may be returned.
  • The size of the header or the size of the body may be incorrectly calculated.
  • Unnecessary carriage return or linefeed characters may be added to message segments.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the separator between the body and the header of the message is malformed.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
