A Substituted Home Drive May Be Remapped by Windows Task Manager (316114)

SYMPTOMS

If you use the subst command to substitute the drive letter that is assigned as your network home folder in your user properties, the following procedures remove the substitution and remap the home folder to the setting that is defined in your user profile:
  • Clicking the Task Manager button in the Windows Security dialog box (pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE opens the Windows Security dialog box).
  • Pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to start Windows Task Manager.

CAUSE

This behavior is designed to prevent you from substituting a drive to another user's home drive.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, do not use the subst command to substitute your home drive letter. This method is sometimes used to provide a mobile user with a cached copy of his or her network home drive while the user is disconnected from the network. Windows 2000 includes a better method that is called Client-Side Caching to accomplish this.

STATUS
