The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Visual Studio .NET Beta 2 PDC Release
  • Microsoft Visual Studio .NET (2002), Professional Edition
  • Microsoft Visual C# .NET (2002)

This article was previously published under Q316097

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open a Web project in Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2002 Professional Edition (PE) that was originally created by using Microsoft Visual Studio .NET Beta 2 Professional Developer Conference Release, you may receive the following error message:
Documents in this folder are not available. The folder may have been moved or deleted, or network problems may be preventing a connection to the server.
Note This error occurs only intermittently.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Locate the folder that contains the project.
  2. Copy this folder into a different folder.
  3. Start Visual Studio .NET.
  4. On the File menu, point to Open, and then click Project from Web to open the project.
NOTE: After you apply this workaround, you may notice that the new folder does not display the Web Folder icon. Even though the operating system does not recognize the new folder as a Web folder, you can open the project from this folder successfully.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem does not occur if the computer that has the Professional Developer Conference version of Visual Studio .NET also has Front Page Server Extensions (FPSE) installed. This problem also does not occur if the computer that is running Visual Studio .NET (2002) Professional Edition is also running Microsoft Windows 2000 Server.

Steps to reproduce this behavior

  1. Set up three computers as follows:
    • Computer A: Install Microsoft Windows 2000 and Visual Studio .NET Beta 2 Professional Developer Conference Release. Do not install FPSE.
    • Computer B: Install Windows 2000 with Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) version 5.0.
    • Computer C: Install Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional and Visual Studio .NET (2002) Professional Edition. Do not install FPSE.
  2. Use Computer A to create a Microsoft Visual C# .NET Web project on Computer B. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Project.
    2. In the New Project dialog box, click Visual C# Projects under Project Types, and then click ASP.NET Web Service or ASP.NET Web Application under Templates.
    3. In the Location text box, type the URL for Computer B. For example, type http://ComputerB. Click OK.
  3. Use Computer C to open the project on Computer B. On the File menu, point to Open, and then click Project from Web.

Notice that the project sometimes opens successfully. However, the project may fail intermittently with the above-mentioned error message.
