After you complete the procedure that is described in this article, Windows-based clients connect to a shared folder on the Windows 2000 Server-based computer on which Gateway Services for NetWare is installed to gain access to either the shared NetWare volume or the shared NetWare folder.

To complete the procedure that is described in this section, you must use a Windows 2000 Server-based computer (which meets the requirements listed on the Hardware Compatibility List) on which Gateway Services for NetWare is installed.

How to Share a NetWare Volume or Folder with a Windows-Based Client

To configure Windows-based clients to gain access to either the NetWare volume or the NetWare folder, enable the gateway on the Windows 2000 Server-based computer, and then create a share:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click GSNW, and then click Gateway.
3. Click to select the Enable Gateway check box, and then type the NetWare user name that the gateway uses to connect to the NetWare server in the Gateway Account box.
   
   NOTE: If the user account is on a NetWare server that is a member of a NetWare Directory Services (NDS) tree, type the user name in the following format:

   .user_name.organizational_unit_name.organization_name

   The user account that is used by the gateway must be a member of the Ntgateway group on the NetWare server. If the NetWare server is a member of an NDS tree, the Ntgateway group is in the same container (organization or organizational unit) as the NetWare server. In addition, either the user account or the Ntgateway group must have the appropriate NetWare permissions for the data that you want to share by using the gateway. The following list describes the appropriate permissions:
   • If the users are assigned Read permissions, the server must have the following permissions:
     • Read
     • File Scan
     
     
   • If the users are assigned Share permissions, the server must have the following permissions:
     • Read
     • Write
     • Create
     • Erase
     • Modify
     • File Scan
     
     
4. Type the password for the user account in both the Password box and the Confirm Password box, and then click OK.
5. Type the share name that you want displayed on clients of the Windows 2000 Server-based computer in the Share Name box, and then type the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path to the NetWare volume in the Network Path box.
   
   Use one of the following formats for the UNC path:
   • For NetWare 3.x servers and NetWare 4.x and 5.x servers that are configured for bindery emulation, use the following format:

     \\NetWare_server_name\Volume_name
     \\NetWare_server_name\Volume_name\Folder_name

   • For NetWare 4.x and 5.x servers that are not configured for bindery emulation:

     \\Tree_name\Volume_name.Organizational_unit_name.Organization_name
     \\Tree_name\Volume_name.Organizational_unit_name.Organization_name\Folder_name

6. If you want information about the share displayed on the Windows-based client, type a comment in the Comment box.
7. Click the disk drive letter that you want the gateway to use to connect to the NetWare server in the Use Drive box, and then click OK.
8. If you want to configure Gateway Services for NetWare to log on to a specific server, click Preferred Server, and then type the name of the server in the Preferred Server box.
9. If you want to configure Share permissions for a share, click the share name, click Permissions, and then click the permissions that you want to assign to the share in the Type of Access box under Access Through Share Permissions.
10. If you want to assign share permissions to specific users or groups, click add, follow the instructions to assign permissions to either the additional users or groups that are displayed, and then click OK.

Troubleshooting

The gateway may be unable to connect to printers that are connected to NetWare servers that only use Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

You cannot configure Gateway Services for NetWare to use TCP/IP to communicate with NetWare servers. You must configure Internetwork Packet Exchange/Sequenced Packet Exchange (IPX/SPX) on all NetWare servers that Gateway Services for NetWare gain access to.
