This article was previously published under Q316027 SYMPTOMS
When you link a Microsoft Excel Chart object to a Microsoft Office document, and then change the default language for Microsoft Office by using a MultiLanguage User Interface Pack, the links no longer update.CAUSE
When you link to Chart objects, Microsoft Office creates a link that is named with both the sheet name and object name.
Although the sheet names do not change when you change the interface language, the name for the chart object is language-dependent. When you change the interface language, the link still refers to the object name in the language in which the link was created. However, the object name has changed to the new language, so you cannot update the link.
This problem also occurs if you create the files while a language pack is applied, and then you switch to English or to another language.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, follow these steps before you create the link:
- Open your workbook in Microsoft Excel.
- If the Drawing toolbar is not displayed, right-click on any toolbar and then click Drawing to display the toolbar.
- Click the Select Objects button on the Drawing toolbar. Then, click outside the chart and drag a bounding outline around the chart to select it.
- Click in the Name box in the upper-left corner of the program window.
- Type a new name for the chart, and then press ENTER. After you rename the chart, click to clear the Select Objects check box on the Drawing toolbar.
- Select the chart, and then copy and paste the link into your Office document.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
