FIX: #ERR Occurs When You Browse a Cube That Is Write-Enabled and has a Virtual Dimension and an Oracle Data Source (315970)

SYMPTOMS

If your cube in Analysis Services meets these conditions
  • Your data source is from Oracle.
  • Your cube has a virtual dimension.
  • The cube is write-enabled.
When you browse the cube with the Cube Browser in Analysis Manager, you may see #ERR in the result set. If you double-click a #ERR, one of the following error message occurs:
"Unable to display cell properties. Data source provider error. ORA-00904:invalid column name An error occurred during attempt to get a cell value."

-or-

"Unable to display cell properties. Data source provider error. [Microsoft][ODBC driver for Oracle][Oracle]ORA-00904: invalid column name;S0022 An error occurred during attempt to get a cell value.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next SQL Server service pack that contains this hotfix.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use a physical dimension instead of a virtual dimension.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
