The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q315902

SYMPTOMS

When a Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) client connects to the front-end server over a dial-up connection, the client may disconnect after 10 minutes, regardless of the time-out value that is specified on the front-end server. The POP3 client may receive the following error message:
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'user', Server: 'server1', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

CAUSE

This problem can occur in Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2 (SP2) if the code does not read the metabase value correctly.

NOTE: Because of file dependencies, this update requires Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 3.

MORE INFORMATION

After you apply this fix, increase the time-out value in accordance with your company needs. This time-out value does not affect a truly inactive client because the back-end server (which has time-out value of 10 minutes) times out a truly inactive client connection.
