A "Stop" Error Occurs in Nndis.sys with Deserialized NDIS Miniport Drivers (315836)

SYMPTOMS

You may receive the following error message on a blue screen in Windows NT 4.0 during periods of high network traffic:
Stop 0x0000000A (0x00000018, 0x00000000, 0x00000002, 0xf17445f3)
This sample "Stop" code was generated on a computer running Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a (SP6a). The last hexadecimal value may vary on computers with earlier service versions.

CAUSE

There is a small window that exposes a synchronization issue in NDIS under high loads. This problem occurs only if deserialized network adapter drivers are installed on the computer. Deserialized miniport network adapter drivers are specially designed to optimize full-duplex performance. Fault-tolerant and load-balancing network adapter drivers are frequently deserialized to make the most use of the dual network adapters.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.
