File Shares on Legacy FTDisk Sets Are Not Accessible After You Upgrade to Windows Server 2003 (315778)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
This article was previously published under Q315778 SYMPTOMS If you have upgraded from Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 to
Windows Server 2003 and legacy fault-tolerant disk (FTDisk) sets are present,
any file shares that are pointing to folders on the FTDisk sets will not be
shared. CAUSE This behavior occurs because Windows NT 4.0 FTDisk sets are
not fully supported under Windows Server 2003. WORKAROUND To work around this problem, note that you can obtain
access to the data on your FTDisk sets by using the Ftonline tool from the
Windows Support tools. For additional information about the use of the Ftonline
tool, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft
Knowledge Base: 303246 Fault-Tolerant RAID Volumes or Volume Sets Displayed as 'Failed'
After you use Ftonline to make the data accessible,
you can make the shares available by restarting the Server service. You can do
so in the Services administrative tool (by right-clicking Server, and then clicking Restart), or by typing the following commands at a command prompt,
pressing ENTER after each command: net stop dfs
net stop browser
net stop server
net start server
net start browser
net start dfs You must also restart the DFS and Browser services
because they are dependent on the Server service. After the data has
been made available with Ftonline, and the Server service has been restarted,
the shares will be available for the duration of that boot only. STATUSThis
behavior is by design.MORE INFORMATION Because Windows NT 4.0 FTDisk sets are not fully supported
in Windows Server 2003, it is recommended that you use this workaround as a
temporary measure only. As a permanent solution, you should back up the data
from your legacy FTDisk sets, delete them, and recreate them as Dynamic
volumes.
