256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SUMMARY

There are a number of system sounds (for example, swishes and bonks) that occur for specific events. For example, opening or closing the menu produces the "swish" sound. The volume level of these sounds can be too low to hear in some circumstances. To modify the system sound volume, change the key value in the registry.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
The following key value is set to 800:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\TVPAK\Persistent\RMFVolume "VolumeIncrement"=dword:00000320

To increase the system sounds by 300 percent, change the DWORD value to 0000012c, as in the following example:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\TVPAK\Persistent\RMFVolume "VolumeIncrement"=dword:0000012c

MORE INFORMATION

Previously, the volume level of these system sounds was hard-coded; you could not adjust the level unless you installed a new client.
