SYMPTOMS

You may not be able to customize buttons on the Office Shortcut Bar. The buttons may appear blank.

CAUSE

This issue can occur in the following situation:
  • You install Microsoft Office XP.
  • You add the Office XP Shortcut Bar.
  • You right-click the Office Shortcut Bar, and then click Customize.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.


To resolve this issue, follow these steps.

NOTE: The following steps are for Microsoft Windows XP. The terminology used may vary slightly depending on the operating system that you have installed on your computer.
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Run dialog box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Click the Shortcut Bar value under the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_CurrentUser_Software_Microsoft_Office_10.0

  4. In the right pane, click C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Shortcut Bar\.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  6. In the Confirm Key Deletion dialog box, click Yes.
  7. On the File menu, click Close.
  8. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  9. In Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs.
  10. In the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, click Microsoft Office XP.

    NOTE: The Microsoft Office version that you have installed on your computer appears here.
  11. Click Change.
  12. In the Microsoft Office XP Setup dialog box, make sure that Add or Remove Features is selected, and then click Next.
  13. Click the icon next to Office Tools, and then click Run all from My Computer.
  14. Click Update.
  15. When the update is finished, click Close.
  16. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Office Tools, and then click Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar.
The correct options should now be present.
