DCOM Program Hangs After Server Reboot Creating DCOM Object (315575)

SYMPTOMS

A DCOM program (the client) that requests the creation of an object on a computer that is running any of the following operating systems may stop responding (hang):
  • Windows 98 Second Edition
  • Windows 98
  • Windows Millennium Edition

CAUSE

This problem can be caused by a bug in the processing of request in the RPC layer that may cause the server to incorrectly interpret that the unsecured bind request has already been processed.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

A network trace of the event shows that the client is sending a secured RPC bind request that is rejected by the server (because those versions of Windows do not support that type of binding). The client then sends a request for an unsecured RPC bind. The receipt of the unsecured RPC bind request packet is acknowledged by the server at the TCP layer, but the actual request is never acknowledged or rejected by the server at the application layer. The implementation of the DCOM client has a 100-hour timeout for the completion of the bind request, so this is what causes the program to hang.
