WD2000: Extended ANSI Characters in RTF File Are Replaced with Arabic or Hebrew Characters (315495)

SYMPTOMS

When you import a Rich Text Format (RTF) file that contains extended American National Standards Institute (ANSI) characters, such as umlauts or accented characters, the extended ANSI characters change into Arabic or Hebrew characters.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
  1. Language support for a right-to-left language was not active when you saved the RTF file.

    -and-
  2. Language support for a right-to-left language is active when you open the RTF file.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 2002.
