Windows Millennium Edition (Me) or Microsoft Windows 98 to Windows XP
Professional or Windows XP Home Edition, you may receive one or both of the
following error messages: Windows upgrade cannot
continue because it could not load a file
D:\i386\win9xupg\w95upg.dll
A device attached to this system is not
working properly Upgrade functionality is disabled and your
copy of Windows only allows upgrades You may receive these messages
when the installation program copies files from the i386 folder to your hard
disk. CAUSE This behavior can occur if the Roxio Easy CD Creator
program is installed on your computer. RESOLUTION To resolve this issue, remove Easy CD Creator before you
run Windows XP Setup, or quit all running programs except for Windows Explorer
and Systray, and then run Windows XP Setup again. To do this, follow these
steps:
- Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to open the Close Program dialog box.
- In the list of programs that are running, select any
program except Windows Explorer or Systray, and then click End Task to quit the program that you selected. Repeat this step for all
running programs except Windows Explorer and Systray, and then click Cancel.
- Navigate to the folder or drive that contains the Windows
XP installation files, and then double-click Winnt32.exe. Follow the on-screen instructions to upgrade your computer
operating system to Windows XP.
