How To Implement a Chat Community in Exchange 2000 Server (315210)

SUMMARY

This step-by-step article explains how to install the Exchange 2000 Chat service on an existing Exchange 2000 server or on a standard Microsoft Windows 2000-based server.

The Chat service does not depend on other Exchange 2000 Server services, but Active Directory and Exchange 2000 Server must be deployed in the domain to support the Chat service. You can deploy the Chat service on a distributed environment; however, you cannot host a single chat channel on multiple servers.

Install the Chat Service

1. Click Start, click Run, type disk drive:\setup\i386\setup.exe in the Run box, and then click OK.
2. In the welcome screen of the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Installation wizard, click Next.
3. In the Component Selection screen, under Microsoft Exchange 2000, click Change.
4. Under Microsoft Exchange Chat Service, click Install, and then click Next.
5. In the Component Summary screen, click Next to begin the installation.
6. On the final screen of the wizard, verify that the installation was completed successfully, and then click Finish.

Set Up a Chat Community

1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.
2. Expand Administrative Groups, expand First Administrative Group, and then expand Chat Communities.
3. Right-click Default-Chat-Community, and then click Properties.
4. In the Default-Chat-Community Properties dialog box, on the General tab, type the name of the chat community in the Name box.
   
   Note that the name cannot include blank spaces or have a number as the last character.
5. Click the Channels tab, and then click to select the Allow dynamic channels check box.
6. Click the Messages tab, and in the Message of the day (MOTD) box, type a message that you want all users to see when they connect to the chat community.
7. Click the Authentication tab, click to clear the Basic Authentication check box, and then click OK.
8. In the console tree, expand Servers, expand your server, and then expand Protocols.
9. Right-click IRCX, and then click Properties.
10. In the IRCX Properties dialog box, click Add.
11. In the Add Community dialog box, verify that your chat group is displayed, and then click OK.
12. Click Properties.
13. In the Properties dialog box, click to select the Enable server to host this chat community check box, and then click OK.
14. In the IRCX Properties dialog box, click OK.
